Old fashioned afternoon

As our topic this term is 'In the Past', we have been learning about things from a long time ago.
This afternoon we had a go at making some old fashioned lemonade.
We squeezed the juice out of some lemons and added it to some warm water with some sugar. Once the sugar had dissolved we topped it up with cold water.

We all had a taste of the old fashioned lemonade and compared it with lemonade you can buy now. A lot of us preferred the old style lemonade! It was really yummy.
We talked about what boys and girls did before they had television and computer games like we have now. We looked at some games they played and the toys they had.
We made our own peg dolls, just like the ones they used to make to play with.

Marbles used to be another popular activity. We got some large hoops and took turns at trying to hit the marble in the middle of the hoop by rolling our own ones in. Some of us managed to hit it but it was quite tricky.

Everyone enjoyed playing marbles. Some even thought it was more fun than playing on the computer! I think we might have to have another game sometime soon!

Months of the Year

Some of us have been learning about the months of the year. We have been listening to this song to help us remember them.

Tree Planting

On Friday afternoon, we went out to the back playground to help the Green Swans plant some trees.
First we had to listen to some instructions so that we knew what to do.
It was quite hard work trying to plant the shrubs but an adult helped us to push them into the ground if we needed help.

After all that hard work we went back inside for a drink and a slice of well deserved cake!
It will be exciting to be able to watch the trees grow bigger over the years.

Halloween Fun

As part of our Halloween activities this afternoon, we made some Bubbling Witches Brew.
First we half filled a bottle with vinegar.
Next, we added either red or yellow food colouring and some glitter.
To help make it bubbly, we put in a good squirt of washing up liquid.

Lastly, we added some bicarbonate of soda and watched the mixture bubble up. It made quite a mess but luckily we had put the bottles on a tray to catch the brew.

Air transport

We have been busy this week learning about different types of air transport.
Today we made paper aeroplanes then went into the hall to test them out. Some flew quite far.

We also had great fun making a balloon rocket. We blew up a balloon then taped it to a straw which was threaded through some thread. When we were ready we undid the clip at the tail of the balloon and watched it go!

Our trip to the Lifeboat

This morning we went a visit to the Lifeboat.
We all sat very well to listen to the information at the start in the Lifeboat hut before splitting into 2 groups - half went onto the Lifeboat and the other half stayed in the hut to find out more about Lifeboats. We swapped over activities after a wee while.

In the Lifeboat hut, we were show some of the important items that are needed on the Lifeboat. We got to try on a crash helmet and a life jacket. It gave us all a bit of a fright when it was inflated!
On the Lifeboat, we got to explore the inside. We were able to sit in the drivers seat and pretend to steer the boat. There were lots of buttons and maps to look at that they use when they are out in the water to help them find and rescue people in trouble.

We all thoroughly enjoyed our outing and found out lots of information about the important job that a Lifeboat does.

JBT Visit

On Monday morning we had a visit from a JBT lorry.
We were all had a turn at going inside the cab, It was quite tricky to get into as it was so high up!

We could sit it in the drivers seat and pretend to drive the lorry. We even got to honk the horn which was very loud!

Road Safety Visit

Today we had a visit from road saftey officer Yvonne Scott.
She told us all about how to stay safe when the nights get darker by wearing fluorescent vests or arms bands.

As well as telling us how to cross the road safely, Yvonne reminded us of the importance of wearing a sealtbelt while travelling in the car.
She use a toy car with beanbag people inside and a ramp to show us what would happen if we had an accident with and without our seatbelts on.

Everyone listened very well and found out a lot of new road safety facts from todays visit.
