Out and about - winter

We are learning about birds in winter this term. We made feeders.

Light and Sound

We will be learning about light and sound this term.

We have looked for sources of light.

We have looked, used and named colours.

We have been learning that we need to be bright and be seen for road safety.

We have been learning how we use our eyes to see light.

We have been learning how dark is the absence of light when we look at shadows.

We marked shadows and saw how the sun moves over time.

A walk around Kirkwall helped us compare buildings, cars and people with photos taken in the past.

Old fashioned afternoon

As our topic this term is 'In the Past', we have been learning about things from a long time ago.

This afternoon we had a go at making some old fashioned lemonade.

We squeezed the juice out of some lemons and added it to some warm water with some sugar. Once the sugar had dissolved we topped it up with cold water.

We all had a taste of the old fashioned lemonade and compared it with lemonade you can buy now. A lot of us preferred the old style lemonade! It was really yummy.

We talked about what boys and girls did before they had television and computer games like we have now. We looked at some games they played and the toys they had.

We made our own peg dolls, just like the ones they used to make to play with.

Marbles used to be another popular activity. We got some large hoops and took turns at trying to hit the marble in the middle of the hoop by rolling our own ones in. Some of us managed to hit it but it was quite tricky.

Everyone enjoyed playing marbles. Some even thought it was more fun than playing on the computer! I think we might have to have another game sometime soon!
